The town originally called Orangeville became known as Scottsdale in 1894 and has gone on to become a thriving tourist attraction, with shops and galleries, golf courses and spas that not only rival the best cities in the world, but often surpass them!

Scottsdale is a unique city for several reasons, not the least of which is no matter where you are in town, you can always catch a glimpse of the Sonoran mountains, thanks to a city law that limits the heights of buildings. Another unique thing about Scottsdale? No billboards. It makes the ride just as interesting as the destination here, so make sure you take a look around at the architectural detail while you’re on the way to your resort or the links, or any one of the hundreds of destinations that wait for you. It gives the city a special look and the sights really are something to see!

What to see first?. Art Gallery or Museum? The canals or the Railroad Park? The golf courses are world class and the biggest thing you need to think about is which one to start at first. There’s a reason Scottsdale was called “America’s Best Place to Live for Golf!” The greens are calling!

Whether you’re here in February to visit, or a year round resident, make plans to attend the Parada del Sol, an annual month long event that has been a staple here since 1954 with the PRCA Rodeo added in 1956. Cowboys and cowgirls come from all around the country to show off their skills and participate in this historic event.

Not a rodeo person? No worries, we’ve got movies! The Annual Scottsdale International Film Festival happens every year to promote understanding of the world’s cultures through films brought in from around the world. While the film festival isn’t here year round, our many movie theaters offer the latest releases from romantic comedy to drama and cult classics to independent films. Another thing you won’t want to miss is the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show. February 2011 will mark its 56th year and you will never see any more beautiful horses anywhere. Over 2000 horses compete in this show, coming from all over the country and regardless of who walks away with the blue ribbon, owner and animal alike stand stall at the end of the day and you will too, to see these breathtaking horses.
